From 18 November 2025, all company directors and people with significant control (PSCs) will be legally required to verify their identity with Companies House.
This change is part of the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023, which aims to reduce the risk of companies being used for fraudulent or illegal purposes.
Who Needs to Verify?
- All company directors
- The equivalent of a director – members, general partners and managing officers
- All people with significant control (PSCs)
- Someone who files for a company – i.e a company secretary
This applies whether you are newly appointed or have held your position for some time.
When Will It Be Mandatory?
Identity verification is currently voluntary but will become mandatory from 18 November 2025.
How to Verify Your Identity
You can complete the process online if you have one of the following documents:
- Biometric passport from any country
- UK photo driving licence (full or provisional)
- UK biometric residence permit (BRP)
- UK biometric residence card (BRC)
- UK Frontier Worker permit (FWP)
Verification is carried out via GOV.UK One Login and is free of charge.
The system will guide you through a few questions to help you choose the best verification route.
Your Companies House Personal Code
Once verified, you’ll receive a Companies House personal code – a unique identifier linked to you.
From 18 November 2025, you will need this code to:
- File a company’s confirmation statement
- Be appointed as a director of a company
- Become a person with significant control (PSC)
All linked directors and PSCs must complete the verification process to meet the new requirements.
What Happens If You Don’t Verify?
If you fail to verify your identity, you will be unable to:
- File statutory documents with Companies House
- Set up a new company or entity
If you have any questions regarding the process, please do not hesitate to get in touch at enquiries@teamjs.co.uk.
