The new National Living Wage (NLW) and National Minimum Wage (NMW) rates will come into effect from 1 April 2026.

These changes could have a significant impact on staffing costs, payroll processes and compliance obligations for many businesses.  Employers should start preparing now to ensure payroll systems and budgets are updated in time.

New Rates from April 2026:

  • National Living Wage (21+): £12.71 per hour (up from £12.21)
  • Ages 18–20 (NMW): £10.85 per hour (up from £10.00)
  • Ages 16–17 and Apprentices: £8.00 per hour (up from £7.55)

Apprentice Eligibility:

Apprentices qualify for the apprentice rate if they are:

  • Under 19 years old, or
  • Aged 19+ and in the first year of their apprenticeship

Apprentices aged 19 or over who have completed their first year of their apprenticeship should be paid the National Minimum Wage for their age group.
